Zen of Watercolour

Lillian Loponen carries with her 32 years of working with watercolour. In this course Lillian takes the student on an adventure of exploration in watercolour techniques, imaging and design concepts. Watercolour play is the focus used to explore the medium; gently taking the student away from preconceived ideas of what art is and into intuitive imagining and design. The hope is to change perspective on what creativity is. The final product is a cropped view of student work suitable for exhibition, art cards, a journal book cover, etc. No art skills are necessary and no drawing is required.
Put a Lid On It!

This workshop will explore making wheel thrown lidded vessels from storage jars to casseroles and teapots with various types of lids. We will look at the purpose and fit of different styles of lids and practice throwing a variety of them. Students will need to be able to centre and throw cylinders.

Hand-Build a Clay Lamp

Hand-build your own very unique and personal ‘mood’ lamp of clay. This lamp will have pieces of glass, marbles, semi-precious stones, beads and bottle tops set into it. The light base will be inside the lamp and shine through the set-in glass/stones.
This workshop will consist of 6 hours Sunday for construction, 2 hours for oxide/glazing 10 days later (work needs to completely dry before bisque firing) and a 4 hour Sunday for final assembly.
Glass, marbles and stones will be available, but bring in your own special pieces to make it individual.
Getting Started with Oil Painting

Oil paint is a lovely, buttery and exciting medium to work with. It can increase color mixing ability and luminescence in paintings. Discover the very basics over six classes with seasoned painter and teacher, Emma Barr.
There are a variety of materials and other mediums at your fingertips, which when combined with the versatility of oil paints, gives you a variety of interesting ways to begin an oil painting. Certain drawing and painting mediums are compatible with oil paints and when utilized, will make your painting experience interesting and enjoyable!
Learn how to handle brushes, set up a painting palette, discover oil compatible mediums such as paint thinners, charcoal, toned grounds/supports, water-soluble pencils and acrylic under painting.

Acrylic Painting

Join seasoned local artist Emma Barr for a fun and comprehensive introduction to acrylic painting. This course is suitable for the beginner or self-taught intermediate. Using acrylic paints, you will explore the heart and soul of painting: color, form, expression, pictorial space and content. You will have the unique opportunity to paint from whatever inspires you personally. Enhance your technical skills in brush handling and using acrylic mediums in addition to acrylic pigments. Don’t miss this great opportunity to be introduced to acrylic painting from the ground up. The next piece of art you hang on your living room wall just might be your own!

Portrait Sculpture

Surface finishing - April 20, 6-8pm
The focus of this week-end intensive will be the use of clay as a sculptural material to create a portrait bust. Students will make a number of small studies and then begin work on their main project, to be completed by the end of class on Sunday. Work will be dried and fired before students return for one evening to finish the surface through the application of stains, oxides and/or glazes. We will have a model to work from for a brief time but will be working also with photographs, mirrors and movement.
Using Clay Slip

This workshop will cover “Clay Slip” from mixing it to colouring it. Students will explore many of the different ways of using and decorating with slip including slip trailing, wiping, painting, stamping and stippling.
Batik, Print and Bind
Learn 3 different disciplines while creating your own personal journal!

Participants’ will use the batik process to create two possible journal covers in Karen Rhebergen’s class. Meshell Melvin will lead students in printmaking. You will develop an original design, carve it out of a soft lino block and print several variations. Mary Hudgin will help you to mount your batik cover on a canvas backing and using an outside stitching technique, students will sew together signatures, created from their individual prints, to complete a journal.
