ARTS IN THE PARK

The Yukon Art Society and Steve Slade launched the 13th season of Arts in the Park on Tuesday, May 19, in the lovely downtown LePage Park, corner of 3rd Avenue and Wood Street. This annual, summer-long celebration of performance and visual arts is open to all to attend and entirely free of charge. Music producer Steve Slade has a first rate roster for you featuring local and visiting performing talent represented by musicians; actors; singers/songwriters; storytellers and dancers!

Northwestel Family Day

Wednesday, our most popular day, will still be family day with a focus on music and performance for the young at heart. We’ve stepped up our craft program to include mixed media and some very inventive child friendly projects. Hope to see you there!

Artists Down Under

We’ve made some exciting new changes and increases to the visual arts aspect of the program this year. Artists will no longer be demonstrating for 3 hours a day in the park; instead, you can find them working away and available to chat about their work and process for 5 hours a day, rain or shine, in the Arts Underground Community Studio. The Arts Underground Demonstrating Artist Residency Program will run June 15 to August 14. The Arts Underground is located in the lower level of the Hougen Center on Main Street.

Nicole Bauberger

Demonstrating July 27-31:
Nicole will begin residency in the Arts Underground Community Studio on Monday, July 27th. Nicole will be painting ravens in oils and acrylics. She will be exploring the effects of various colours on black backgrouonds, thus titling her project Brightness takes form in the dark. Nicole is preparing for a solo show in Yellowknife at the Birchwood Gallery and she's hoping that some of what she paints during her residency will go to that show. She will be demonstrating her painting technique, and of course, she will be available to chat with people as they come in.

Visitors to the studio will also have a chance to try oil or acrylic painting themselves, as Nicole plans to offer a hands-on drop in over the lunch hour.

Helen O'Connor

Demonstrating August 3-7:

Helen O'Connor's art is often inspired by materials found in the wilderness of her Yukon back yard - willow, lichen, fireweed. She explores a variety of media, with a passion for hand papermaking, watercolour painting and printmaking. Helen studied English and Visual Art at the University of Western Ontario and she holds a Bachelor of Education from U.W.O.

During her residency, Helen plans to work with hand papermaking and random willow weave in 2D and 3D work. She will be demonstrating the entire process of papermaking from raw fibre stage, to cooking, to hand beating and pulping.

Helen will also have a display of photos which show the process in an outdoor setting, the equipment used, and many examples of her finished work. Helen has taught many workshops and is very experienced working with the public and plans to arrange a time for visitors to try hands on papermaking.
