Artist Statement
When I started this body of work, I had in mind to create an exhibition that reflected on walking, journeys and paths. As soon as I started sketching, new themes emerged. This compilation speaks of seasons-you will see this in the colours. It talks about the houses and lives we build, and how these things while feeling like they are permanent, are gifts - for today.
“I Will Build You a Home” and other works are created with wax and fabric dye. The cotton muslin has been washed, painted with molten wax, crumpled, dipped in dye, painted with dye, coloured with crayons and ironed between newsprint. Many of the steps are repeated, and each surface has been painted anywhere from three to ten times. This is all part of the process, and it allows me to rest and reflect between stages, while the fabric cools and dries.
I was kind of surprised at the physical work involved in producing larger pieces like these. I slept well while creating this exhibition! As for walking –I hope that you enjoy sharing my journey, as you make your own path around and among the quiet celebrations that I have attempted to portray.
Thank you to Arts Underground and to my family and friends who have offered encouragement, wisdom, inspiration and practical help to make the idea of this exhibit into a reality.
